Eastenders' Charity Cricket

thumb_slingsby_eastenders0908Wow, this was a bit of a rushed mission!! A last-minute invite to promote the holidays4heroes cause at an Eastenders' Charity Cricket Match Laughing

After a longer journey than expected, I finally arrived at my Bearer's house where I was to undergo a crash course in Cockney before my date with the Stars.  After a good rest, the day finally came for us to journey to North London for the event.

On arrival I was happy to see some fellows and fellowesses from the ARRSE community to lend a hand on the day.  I couldn't wait to meet the characters from the country's most successful and loved soap opera.  So there I was, meeting "Minty" and "Patrick" and getting a cuddle from both. The idea was that I would go around and promote the cause and assist in setting up our very own Hols4Heros v. Eastenders Cricket Day.

Helped by an extremely cute little lady to carry me, we went to see all the members of the Cricket teams, which included many International players from the West Indies and Sri Lanka.

Rudolph Walker ("Patrick") was sharing the commentating with Cliff Parasi ("Minty") ... and it was hilarious!  I only just understand cricket, but the young lad (around 12 years old) who clean bowled 2 batsmen was something to see, and he was only denied his hat-trick because they were the last 2 batsmen!

Some females were very interested in Dennis Watts, maybe a bit too interested ... haha.

I made sure I was in and around the right people and I think we impressed, as we managed to secure TWO events next year with the Eastenders/Celebrity Cricket circuit. I must say the venue is impressive and very friendly. The event I was taken too was very low key in respect to what was discussed for our future events.

I just had to get a photo with the Cricket Squad, and managed to work my way into a photo shoot with assistance from my little helper.

So - this was a wonderful day and, even though it was a last minute thing, we managed to get some fantastic lots for auction for Hols4H, two events next year and a lot of people interested in the Cause with offers of help in the future.  I met some lovely people and I am a very happy Bear.

[Ed: Huge thanks to those who managed to weave this together, and agreed to offer further opportunities next year. I just have to say ... Big Bear Hugs to you all!

More pictures are promised - keep checking for updates!]

Our Status

Sgt Slingsby, Holidays 4 Heroes and Help Them Out are not registered charities but non profit making community organisations. This approach allows us to  both reduce governance costs and provide a response time to urgent cases that befits our stated objectives of having the shortest possible 'flash to bang' time. If you have any concerns about this please do not hesitate to contact us.

Holidays 4 Heroes

Holidays 4 Heroes LogoHolidays 4 Heroes is an informal group of people that assists wounded service personnel and their families get a precious break from the routine of rehab, hospital appointments and visits to welfare offices by facilitating holidays away from it all in accommodation donated by our sponsors in the UK and abroad.

Help Them Out

Help Them Out logoDeals with the cases that either lie outside the normal remit of the main Service Charities, or require a faster response than they can usually provide.  Sometimes the cases require financial assistance, a little bit of nudging in the right direction for long-term help, or the application of a bit of expertise.
