Cpl Horsa in Tenerife

thumb_horsa_tenerifeDespite the appeal of a Christmas at home with the team, the offer of a trip was made so I bravely volunteered to set off for two weeks of 5* R&R in Costa Adeje, Tenerife.

After a few funny looks from security at Manchester airport (doesn't everyone have a camouflaged and medal wearing bear in their hand luggage?) off we went. As the flight was so busy I spend most of it in a daysack inhabiting an overhead locker, but judging by some of the noise and chaos outside it was probably the quietest and most comfortable place to be!

On arrival at the hotel I couldn't wait to explore my new surroundings, so after a spell checking out the rooms, I decided to catch a few rays and survey the surrounding area from the balcony with a beer, I was on holiday after all!!! (pictures 01 & 02)

Grenada - Falling Under Your Spell

thumb_braille_grenadaSgt Braille got fed up with the British Winter, and managed to charm his way into a lady's suitcase for a few weeks of warmth and sunshine in Grenada.

Minor Website Upgrade

thumb_lions2Hi, folks.  I'm sorry we've been a bit quiet over the last couple of months ... usual stuff, like waiting for Bearers to submit their trip reports and photos.

Oh, and of course the Christmas and New Year holidays.

A Tailor-Made experience for Slingsby

thumb_slingsby_samuelbros

"Peace on Earth and Good Will to All Men"

To round off his year's work, Sgt Braille visited the Parish Church of St Peter to check out their Annual Christmas Tree Festival.

Annual Report 2009

holidays4heroeslogo2The following message is from our "Head of Operations" at holidays4heroes ... and it proves things are working!

Arnhem Adventures - Part 2

thumb_arnhem65thTwo Bears were privileged to participate in the 65th Anniversary of the Arnhem landings (Operation MARKET GARDEN).

Arnhem Adventures - Part 1

thumb_arnhem_praIt all began on the Sunday of the August Bank Holiday when I, Cpl Arnhem from Sgt Slingsby's Team, was taken to the Aldershot Branch of the PRA for the Summer BBQ.

Poppy Appeal 2009

thumb_poppy09There's a bit of a mystery about The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, and how it all works.  So we sent Sgt Braille to report on the process.

The Last Detail

With the Christmas Party Season approaching, you might consider taking a look at THE LAST DETAIL for table decorations and other party and wedding related products.

The Army Rumour Service 2009 Scottish Crawl

thumb_braille_jockcrawlThe following text has not been translated from the original Jockinese, but apparently relates to a drinking and fund-raising tour of Edinburgh in which Sgt Braille was forced [without much protest] to participate.

UK Postal Strikes

newspaper-iconThe current series of Postal Strikes in the UK have not (yet) had any direct impact on the work of Slingsby's Team on behalf of holidays4heroes. All the Bears are "present and accounted for".

Slingsby Goes Golfing

thumb_slingsby_3rtr0910Sergeant Slingsby was despatched to Devon to support the fundraising Golf Day organised by the 3 Royal Tank Regiment Golf Society.

Men, Motorcycles and Mud

thumb_braille_elrat0910Another outing for Sgt Braille ... I had barely had time to re-acclimatise to the chill of Scotland after the heat of La Torre before my bearer and her OH packed me into the car, along with Jake the dog, to attend the Elrat (East Lothian Road And Trail Motorcycle Club) Enduro at Griffin Forest, near Aberfeldy.

La Torre Revisited

thumb_braille_latorre0910For those who had never noticed, the La Torre Golf Resort in Spain is where many of the families being supported by holidays4heroes are accommodated. Sgt Braille took another trip there to update himself.

PTSD Worldwide

thumb_ptsdworldwideSgt Slingsby is pleased to be able to publicise PTSD Worldwide.  Sgt Slingsby and holidays4heroes work mainly for those who have been physically wounded, but we we know there are many whose injuries are not so obvious.

Verdun

thumb_horsa_verdun0910The Battle of Verdun lasted  from 21 February to 18 December 1916, and resulted in more than a quarter of a million battlefield deaths and at least half a million wounded. It was the longest battle, and one of the most devastating, in World War I.

Sgt Braille in the USA

The Bear-Minder-General and Mrs BMG went on holiday again, and agreed to take me with them.  Virginia, here I come!

Our Status

Sgt Slingsby, Holidays 4 Heroes and Help Them Out are not registered charities but non profit making community organisations. This approach allows us to  both reduce governance costs and provide a response time to urgent cases that befits our stated objectives of having the shortest possible 'flash to bang' time. If you have any concerns about this please do not hesitate to contact us.

Holidays 4 Heroes

Holidays 4 Heroes LogoHolidays 4 Heroes is an informal group of people that assists wounded service personnel and their families get a precious break from the routine of rehab, hospital appointments and visits to welfare offices by facilitating holidays away from it all in accommodation donated by our sponsors in the UK and abroad.

Help Them Out

Help Them Out logoDeals with the cases that either lie outside the normal remit of the main Service Charities, or require a faster response than they can usually provide.  Sometimes the cases require financial assistance, a little bit of nudging in the right direction for long-term help, or the application of a bit of expertise.
