Cpl Horsa has a riot at RIAT, and makes a guest appearance at Farnborough Airshow

thumb_horsa_1007Shopgirl woke me rather early with breakfast on a grey Sunday morning.  I asked where we were going and was advised to ‘wait and see'.

Cpl Arnhem was at Farnborough too!!

thumb_arnhem_sbac10aApparently my Bearer calls it "work". He spent several hours trying to convince me that he really had to be at Farnborough, doing his important day job - and that they were going to be long days with very early starts. Eventually I was persuaded to join him, even though there was no promise of me doing a bit of parachuting on the side ... I guess I'm just gullible!

Sgt Slingsby at the Farnborough Air Show

thumb_slingsby_sbac2010After meeting my new friends at the Top Gear studio, I was rushed down to the West Country at high speed in a rather natty little sports car.  After she'd had a coffee and a piece of sticky toffee pudding to sustain her on her onward journey, I said 'goodbye' to my Bearer who headed further south and west.

Sgt Hotspur at EuroDisney

thumb_hotspur_eurodisneySgt Hotspur and Bearer arrived at ACF Camp on the Saturday morning. Due to the training programme and shortage of adult staff, the Bear was unable to make an appearance until the Disney trip. However, he was bear-napped by persons unknown, ransom was two tins of cola. Thankfully, the SBS (Special Bear Service) swung into action and rescued him without ransom being paid. Rumour is that the Royal Irish Regiment had something to do with it.

Slingsby & "Top Gear" - Mission Impossible!

thumb_slingsby_topgearStaying with my current Bearer has given me the chance to catch up on my world defence and security knowledge, as she is the PR at Jane's. But after a week of sitting around reading, and sifting through her 'frillies' drawer while she was at work, it was good to get on with the mission.

Summer Camp at Altcar

thumb_braille_altcar1007"Deja-vu", I thought as I climbed out of my cardboard travelling container. "I‘ve definitely been here before - I'd recognise that black hairy dog anywhere!" Suddenly it all became clear when I heard the soft Scottish lilt of my Bearer - I was back to visit the Black Watch Bn, Army Cadet Force.

Slingsby at Basepoint

thumb_slingsby_nancyzI'm having a busy time at the moment, travelling here and there all over The South. Being in the area meant I was able to pay a visit to our very good friends at Basepoint, in Basingstoke, where young Cpl Horsa had been only a month or so ago.

This time they were going to meet The Head Bear!!

Slingsby Sees Some Armour

thumb_slingsby_tankfestI'd heard the humans talking about visiting something called Tankfest, but had wondered what it was about. Then I heard them bickering in Bere Regis - the usual ... ‘Turn left' ... ‘Why, when it says Bovington is right?'. From this I gathered we were going to a place called Bovington, and that some women are better navigators than some men!

Out and about with Max and Minty

thumb_arnhem_mintyI was parachuted in from HQ Bears to the leafy wilds of Hampstead, to meet eminent Author, Historian and film maker Max Arthur. My first duty was to attend his 70th Birthday, which was held in a very nice bistro [none of your egg 'n chips here, BMG!! Just Champagne and totty!!

Sgt Slingsby visits Shopgirl

thumb_slingsby_shopgirlAfter a very busy weekend at Abergavenny, on Monday morning I had a doze in the car on the way back.  I woke up in a car park somewhere in Hampshire to meet my new Bearer.

Armed Forces Day, Jersey

thumb_braille_Jersey1006Sometimes a small Bear can be caught by surprise, and today was no exception. In the middle of my transit to Scotland, I suddenly found myself in Jersey again, this time for their first formal Armed Forces Day event.

Weymouth Veterans Festival, 2010

thumb_slingsby_weymouth10aTwo Bears Enjoy Weymouth - or Two Grand Days Out

For the benefit of those who are easily confused, this was not a trip to the seaside but, instead, two days of hard work manning a holidays4heroes stall at the annual Weymouth Veterans Festival.

Sgt Braille and some BIG guns

thumb_braille_1006_fieldgunSgt Braille has been with the Field Gun teams at Wellington College for the last month.  And it hurts, and its hard work for a small Bear!!

Virginia celebrates the return of Sgt Braille

thumb_braille_usa10aSgt Braille felt it necessary to supervise the Bear-Minder-General and his wife on yet another holiday in the USA. Braille had enjoyed the experience last year, and so he packed his few belongings and prepared for the long journey to Alexandria, Virginia, on the outskirts of Washington DC.

Basingstoke?!

thumb_horsa_1006basingstokeYES!  Basingstoke is actually the local hub of a great bunch of Holidays4Heroes supporters!  Hugs and Honey to you all.

Bear Defies Gravity for BLESMA

thumb_hotspur_1005So there I was, minding my own business, sunning myself on a sofa when I was rudely snatched up, stuffed in a plastic bag and abandoned at the Post Office again!!

Two Bears at the Welsh Warrior Festival

thumb_slingsby_abergavennyIt was a lovely sunny Wednesday when Cpl Horsa and myself (the Famous Sgt Slingsby) were packed along with lots of other stuff into bags and boxes. About lunch time we drove to some hidden car park near a small brook and we thought that might be the end of us. But then all doors opened wide and there was ... the little bearer I spent Christmas and New Year with last year, who hugged and held us.

Horsa and The Phantom Bear Dresser

thumb-horsa_tpbdIt's been a funny week here with TPBD. I had lots of fun over the course of the Bank Holiday weekend, just about managed to stay out of trouble. The week really has gone quite fast. Today once again "TPBD", "GrownupRafBrat" and "Shopgirl" are meeting for drinks and a meal to hand me over to Sgt Slingsby (where I expect to be put on report for my weekend antics).   Then the Sgt and I can get ready to join the Hols4H guys at the Welsh Warrior Festival at Abergavenny

Horsa at the AAC Museum

thumb_horsa_aacWell, it was an early start here at TPBD House*, too early after my weekend, but still I was up and ready. The sun was coming up and I was a bit dismayed that we were going to be stuck indoors all day. We got to TPBD's place of work, and I was having a look around when I heard growling. I looked round again, and noticed something moving in the potted plants.

Our Status

Sgt Slingsby, Holidays 4 Heroes and Help Them Out are not registered charities but non profit making community organisations. This approach allows us to  both reduce governance costs and provide a response time to urgent cases that befits our stated objectives of having the shortest possible 'flash to bang' time. If you have any concerns about this please do not hesitate to contact us.

Holidays 4 Heroes

Holidays 4 Heroes LogoHolidays 4 Heroes is an informal group of people that assists wounded service personnel and their families get a precious break from the routine of rehab, hospital appointments and visits to welfare offices by facilitating holidays away from it all in accommodation donated by our sponsors in the UK and abroad.

Help Them Out

Help Them Out logoDeals with the cases that either lie outside the normal remit of the main Service Charities, or require a faster response than they can usually provide.  Sometimes the cases require financial assistance, a little bit of nudging in the right direction for long-term help, or the application of a bit of expertise.
